Introduction
Becoming a teacher is a very big responsibility. Getting a job is hard enough, but finding a school you would like to work in is important to as well. A person looking to become a teacher should do research on the surrounding area as well as the school itself. To be able to achieve this goal you must, first, do plenty of research and ask many questions to gather that information. The state of Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States. It has many great school(s), as well as, having its share of under achieving school(s), just like every other state. As of the year of (take out of) 2006, Rhode Island had a population (of) just over one million people. In 2006, the population was 88.9% (take out of)of white people, 6.2% were black (6.2% black ), 2.7% were (take out were) Asian, 0.6% were (take out were) Native American, and 1.5% are ( were) of mixed race. In the state of Rhode Island there are 36 school districts and 319 individual schools. One of the school(s) in the state is Shea High School. Shea High School is part of the Pawtucket district located in the northern part of the state. Shea High School, for the last couple years, has been at the bottom of the list for school academic performance.
Community Background
The community background is diverse and also has other positive qualities compared to surrounding communities in the area (name the community that you are talking about in this introductory statement). In the town of Pawtucket there was a population of 72,958 in (according to) the 2000 census. Of that population, only about 20% of the people actually have (had) a college degree by the age of 25. That shows that many people either did not attend college or did not finish college, ("however," or start a new sentence here) more information will follow in the school analysis. The town of Pawtucket is bordered by the towns of Attleboro, Central Falls, North Providence, East Providence, and Providence. (maybe combine these two sentences) Pawtucket is located in northern Rhode Island. In the town of Pawtucket there is a very diverse population. It consist of whites holding the majority race of 69.1%, second was Hispanic at 13.9%, and other races were at 10.7%(Rephrase: Whites make up the majority of the race with 69.1% of the population, then Hispanics, making up 13.9%, and other races with 10.7%). Of that population 47.4% are males and 52.6% are female. Pawtucket was about $15,000 under (below) the Rhode Island average level of income per household at about $36,407 as of 2005. In this paragraph you repeat "Pawtucket" a lot. Try changing some so that it is not so repetetive, using "it," or "the city." - CSchubart
The community also has poverty concerns. As of 2005, about 19% of people in Pawtucket were living in poverty. Even with this poverty level, Pawtucket had a low crime rate. In 2003, the FBI reported 256 crimes committed in one year. Of the 256 crimes reported, only two were murders. It shows that the crimes that were committed were less harmful. The reason Pawtucket has a low crime rate is because compared to other communitys in the state, this was one of the lower ones (This sentence kind of repeats itself, it doesn't tell why the city has a low crime rate. Try rephrasing). Next I will be talking about the district of Pawtucket.
District Summary
Shea High School is located in the Pawtucket District. This district is responsible for educating over 9,000 students. Throughout the 15 schools that make up the Pawtucket district there are roughly 700 teachers, mostly female. The district has a diverse population of student(s): 47% white, 29% Hispanic, 22% African American, and 2% other. As you can see there are a number of people of different races that attend these school(s) in the district. As you can see this district has 15 school which is much higher then the average district in Rholde Island (This sentence and the one before it begin in the same way. Try changing one of them so it isn't so repetetive). On average there are 5 schools in a district. Financially, Pawtucket is above the Rhode Island average in many ways. (One of the ways is that...)The first is the district total revenue for Pawtucket is well over the Rhode Island average. This is mainly because they have so many more school(s) then (than) each (all the) other district(s) as well as the (a higher) total number of students. The Rhode Island average of total revenue is $34,571,000 compared to Pawtucket's of $106,981,000.
As for the national test score averages, Pawtucket was above average in engilsh (English) but fell short in math. For math testing, the state average was 80% and the Pawtucket district was at 65%. In Engish (English), which includes, verbal and reading, the Pawtucket('s) average was at 80% and the state average was about 75%. As you can see, Pawtucket was average on the state testing scores of the two main subject areas. (The next section) Next, will focus on Shea High School and how it compare(s) with the rest of the state.
School Analysis
Shea High School is located in the State of Rhode Island . The principal that runs the school is Dr. Christopher Lord. Shea includes grades 9 through 12. It is also located in the Pawtucket District (Unnecessary sentence, we know this from the rest of the report, along with the first sentence. Maybe include some new facts). At Shea High School there are more students than most other high schools have in the state. There were 1153 students in 2005. As you can see that is a large amount of students for a high school in Rhode Island. In grade nine there were 353 students, grade ten was 304, grade eleven was 260, and for the graduating class there was 236 total students. As you can see the number of students in each grade decreases each year(You repeat "As you can see" again a few times. Very the ways you start the sentences). The graduation rate for Shea High School met the state goal of 75% by graduatin 76% of the students (by having 76% of the students graduate). Compared to the state average they were behind but they did meet the state average of students graduating(???).
There are a total number of 103 teachers. As of a couple years ago there were more women teachers at Shea High School then (than) male teachers. However in 2005 the students were 51% male and 49% female. For the most part, Shea High School met most of the state goals for math and English. For the SAT scores, Shea High School students fell a little behind the state average. The average score in math for the state was 494. For Shea High school the average math score was at 442. In verbal, the state average was 484 and Shea High school average was 423. As you can see, even though Shea has been at the state average for scores in the state they still found themselves behind the state for the SAT scores. As for the progress of this school, according to the the no child left behind act (capitalize: No Child Left Behind Act)Shea High school met 25 of the 27 targets. That means they were making insufficient progress. What targets did they fail to meet?
As for health issues, Shea High School is lower then almost every state average when it comes to drugs and alcohol. They were under the state average in drinking, smoking cigarettes, and smoking other drugs each year. The only topic they were above average was using chewing tobacco. As for the other health factors for the most part students were able to see the school nurse whenever they needed to. However, 17% of the students did not have a personal doctor. In the end, according to the facts, Shea High School is pretty clean and safe.
Conclusion
As you can see their (there) are positives and negatives at Shea High School. Even though Shea High School finished close to the bottom of the state in learning there is an upside to the school. As I stated, the acdidems ??? are for the most part met the state standards and crime rate is not very high. I would not suggest students go to this school (opinion). However, teachers may find this school to be a place where they can make real change. It could be a good opportunity for a teacher to work in a diverse enviorment(environment) and gain experience workin(g) with all sort(s) of students.
There are a lot of typos throughout the report. Also, you could get more recent information. I did a school in Pawtucket also and I found a lot of updated info. I didn't really notice much of a difference between the old report and yours. Maybe you could add some other facts. - CSchubart
